These "young people" (in the "Too Live Crew" photos) are some of the members of the "original" Sunbeam Youth Ensemble (SYE), which was organized in early 1960s when Broomfield CME Church was known as Williams Temple CME Church, located at 9th and Decatur streets in Richmond, Va. At that time, the choir came under the "very abled and no-nonsense" tutelage of Eddie Radden Jr. and Mary Coe White. The group, also known as the "hardest working" youth choir in Richmond and CME connection, consisted of some 50 voices ranging in age from 3 to 18. We sang all over the place and were often in high demand at events such as the tribute paid to the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., held on the grounds of the Richmond Capitol about a year or so after his death. I might also mention that Linda Brown Lewis -- as young and adorable as she was -- served as our pianist. The SYE was great group. We had a wonderful time and still share a lot of good memories both as singers and children growing up in our beloved church. If you missed being part of the SYE, then you've got a thing or two to learn about singing (smile). Time for a big, celebratory reunion! Cheers, Dorothy (Grady) Rowley

CME History: The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is a historically black denomination within the broader context of Methodism. The group was organized in 1870 when several black ministers, with the full support of their white counterparts in the former Methodist Episcopal Church, South, met to form an organization that would allow them to establish and maintain their own polity, that is, to ordain their own bishops and ministers without the necessity of them being officially endorsed or appointed by the white-dominated body. They called this fellowship the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church, which it remained until their successors adopted the current name in the 1950s. Chalk Level C.M.E. Church in Harnett County, North CarolinaIn the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, bishops are administrative superintendents of the church; they are elected by "delegate" votes for as many years deemed until the age of 74, when he/she must retire. Among their duties are responsibility for appointing clergy to serve local churches as pastor, for performing ordinations, and for safeguarding the doctrine and discipline of the Church. The General Conference, a meeting every four years, comprises an equal number of clergy and lay delegates. In each Annual Conference, CME bishops serve for four-year terms. CME Church bishops may be male or female.
Bishop Teresa E. Snorton to Travel to Holy Land on Pilgrimage in Delegation of 11 Women Bishops (From The Christian Index) WASHINGTON, DC — Eleven ecumenical women bishops from the United States, West Indies and Africa will leave Nov. 12 for a 10-day trip to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. Goals of the trip are to stand in solidarity with women from Christian, Muslim and Jewish traditions working for peace in the region; gather facts and stories to equip the delegation members as educators and advocates for peace after returning; and to explore partnerships for ongoing education and advocacy to affect positive change. Four Christian denominations will be represented in the delegation: United Methodist, Episcopal, African Methodist Episcopal and Christian Methodist Episcopal.
